Óscar Fernández appointed president of Peru's IPD

The Peruvian government has appointed Óscar Fausto Fernández Cáceres as the new president of the Instituto Peruano del Deporte (IPD). The appointment was formalized through a supreme resolution published in the official gazette, El Peruano.

Fernández Cáceres, a lawyer and former high-performance athlete, previously led the IPD from December 2016 to August 2018. He also served as the director of the National Directorate of Physical Education and Sport within the Ministry of Education.

This leadership change follows the resignation of Sergio Luis Ludeña Visalot. Ludeña’s departure comes amid controversy regarding an incident at the Villa Deportiva Nacional (Videna), where fumigation activities were reportedly conducted while members of the national judo team were inside the facilities, exposing athletes to chemical substances.

The transition occurs as Peru prepares for the Lima 2027 Pan American and Parapan American Games.
