Scattered Islands dispute included in UN General Assembly agenda

The dispute over the Scattered Islands has been included on the provisional agenda for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Listed under item 57 regarding international peace and security, the dossier specifically addresses the Malagasy islands of Glorieuses, Juan de Nova, Europa, and Bassas da India.

These four territories in the Indian Ocean are currently administered by France but are claimed by Madagascar. The inclusion of this issue allows Madagascar to maintain the territorial dispute within the multilateral diplomatic framework. This is a recurring matter for the UN; the issue was previously deferred from the 80th session to the current 81st session.

Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, president of the Refondation, has traveled to New York to participate in the high-level week of the General Assembly, scheduled from September 22 to 28, 2026. His participation coincides with the ongoing diplomatic efforts to keep the islands on the international agenda.
