Sceye and SoftBank complete trans-Pacific stratospheric connectivity test

Sceye and SoftBank Corp. have successfully completed a trans-Pacific stratospheric flight as part of the Service Test 1 (ST1) mission. The flight traveled over 15,000 km from New Mexico to Japan over a period of 13 days.

The mission demonstrated several key capabilities for High-Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS), including mobile broadband connectivity to unmodified devices via SoftBank’s core network. It also verified edge computing capabilities and HAPS-based communications with drones to support 3D communications networks.

This successful demonstration aims to advance the commercial deployment of HAPS as stratospheric infrastructure, potentially supporting the development of 6G, AI, and persistent wide-area connectivity.
