Schaeffler adopts physical AI and flexible robotics

Schaeffler is transitioning from traditional automation toward physical AI and flexible robotics to overcome the economic limitations of fixed manufacturing systems. As production volumes and programs become increasingly variable, the company notes that rigid, traditional automated lines may no longer provide a sufficient return on investment.

To address this, the company is implementing systems that can be deployed for various tasks, increasing manufacturing flexibility. Schaeffler is also exploring humanoid robotics as both a new manufacturing opportunity and a potential business market. The company aims to integrate production and development more closely, utilizing digital twins and extensive manufacturing data to improve manufacturability during the early stages of product design.
