Schaeffler develops oil-immersed brakes to meet Euro 7 standards

Schaeffler is developing an innovative oil-immersed multi-disc brake system designed to meet the upcoming Euro 7 emission standards. Unlike traditional open disc and caliper systems that release brake dust into the environment, this technology utilizes a sealed, closed system where steel and friction discs operate while constantly submerged in oil for cooling.

By containing the entire friction mechanism within an airtight housing, the system prevents fine particulate matter from being dispersed during braking. This approach addresses new regulatory requirements that will limit not only exhaust gases but also particulate matter generated by brake and tire wear. The closed structure also offers additional benefits, such as protecting the components from water, dirt, and corrosion, potentially increasing the system's longevity. This technology may be particularly relevant for electric vehicles, where regenerative braking reduces the use of traditional braking systems.
