Schalke 04 CEO criticizes Bundesliga TV revenue distribution
Matthias Tillmann, CEO of FC Schalke 04, has criticized the distribution of television revenue within the German Bundesliga. Speaking to the Frankfurter Allgemeinen Sonntagszeitung, Tillmann argued that the wealth gap in TV earnings is significantly larger in the Bundesliga than in the English Premier League, which he claims harms the league's competitiveness and attractiveness.
Because TV revenue distribution is partially based on sporting performance over the previous five seasons, Schalke currently ranks second to last in the payout hierarchy. Tillmann noted that despite the club's large fanbase and high television viewership, they receive less funding than 16 other clubs.
Additionally, Tillmann challenged the Bundesliga's equity rules. Schalke is currently required to generate a surplus of approximately 10 million euros in the upcoming season to avoid point deductions, due to a negative capital balance of nearly 100 million euros. Tillmann argued that the rule fails to account for the club's assets, specifically noting that the Schalke stadium, which the club largely owns, is valued at over 100 million euros.
