Schalke 04 targets Premier League transfers to manage debt

FC Schalke 04 supervisory board chairman Axel Hefer has outlined a strategic focus on player development and high-value transfers to address the club's significant financial challenges. The club currently reports an uncovered deficit of 96.6 million euros and net debts totaling 116.4 million euros.

Hefer identified the English Premier League as the primary target for maximizing transfer revenues. He noted that the Premier League scouts the Bundesliga more intensively and is prepared to pay higher sums than other leagues. He emphasized that Schalke's ability to develop talent quickly serves as a key asset for future sales.

Achieving promotion to the Bundesliga is viewed as a critical strategic step to facilitate these larger transfer deals. A comparison of recent spending highlights the financial gap: the Premier League spent approximately 4.12 billion euros since July 2026, while the Bundesliga recorded 782 million euros in expenditures.
