Turkey and Italy expand archaeological cooperation in Hierapolis
Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy and Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli met in Denizli to discuss strengthening archaeological and cultural cooperation between Turkey and Italy.
At the 17th Italian Archaeology Missions Symposium held at the Hierapolis Ancient City, officials highlighted the strategic importance of bilateral scientific partnerships. The discussions included expanding cooperation to new projects, such as establishing a scientific dialogue between the Ephesus site in Turkey and the Pompeii Archaeological Park in Italy. Additionally, a joint project is planned for the Elaiussa Sebaste Ancient City in Mersin, set to launch in 2027.
Minister Ersoy emphasized a new vision for Turkish archaeology that moves beyond mere excavation to include conservation, restoration, visitor management, and community engagement. He noted that Italian excavation teams have been active in Hierapolis for 70 years, and under the ‘Heritage for the Future Project,’ Turkish scientists from Pamukkale University are now contributing to these efforts.
In a separate cultural initiative, the Ministry also promoted the Aleksandre Jaba Collection and the Rami Library book launch in Ankara. The collection features 69 Kurdish works, which the Ministry aims to preserve as part of a shared cultural heritage.
