Schengen Area border controls increase over last decade
An analysis of the Schengen Area reveals that temporary internal border controls, originally intended as exceptional measures for threats to public order or security, have become a frequent practice over the last decade.
Member states have notified the European Commission of 465 temporary border controls during this ten-year period. Austria, Germany, and Norway have been the most frequent users of this measure, accounting for one-third of the total with 65, 47, and 44 controls respectively.
In contrast, five countries—Croatia, Greece, Latvia, Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg—have not utilized temporary internal controls within the last decade. While the Schengen Border Code mandates that such measures be used as a last resort and respect principles of necessity and proportionality, many controls have been extended for the maximum legal duration of six months.
