Schiedam women protest expansion of asylum seeker housing

Women gathered in Schiedam, the Netherlands, to demonstrate against the planned expansion of asylum seeker accommodation. The city is currently housing 146 asylum seekers on two barges and, under the Dutch Spreidingswet, must provide space for an additional 327‑340 people. Organiser Jeannette Wagner told reporters the protest is “for the safety of women and children,” citing concerns about crime and harassment in public spaces.

One participant, Michaela, said she was personally assaulted by an asylum seeker and said the police response to her case was inadequate. Around a hundred counter‑demonstrators also assembled, voicing support for refugees and accusing the march of racism. Police kept the two groups apart; one anti‑demonstration attendee was detained for public intoxication. No violent incidents were reported.
