Schiphol Airport experiences crowding due to major rail disruptions
Major train disruptions around Schiphol Airport caused significant crowding at the airport on Saturday following a power outage and switch failures. A power failure in a high-voltage box near Amsterdam Riekerpolder halted traffic between Amsterdam Sloterdijk and Hoofddorp for several hours, affecting services toward Utrecht, Dordrecht, and Venlo.
ProRail reported that the issue was resolved by replacing a defective component, though NS officials noted that restarting the full schedule would take time. While service was expected to stabilize by 17:00, travelers were warned to expect continued delays and congestion.
Additional rail issues affected the western Netherlands, including reduced service between The Hague, Rotterdam, Leiden, and Dordrecht due to a switch malfunction. Furthermore, train traffic between Rotterdam and Delft was halted following an act of arson at a railway bridge in Delfshaven.
