Schiphol flight limits: Raad van State seeks clearer justification
The Raad van State has advised the Dutch cabinet to provide clearer justification for the proposed 500,000 flight limit at Schiphol Airport. While the council expressed no fundamental objections to the plan, it raised concerns regarding the accuracy of noise models and the potential for increased nuisance for local residents if flight numbers increase despite theoretical noise reductions.
The cabinet's proposed regulations, intended to take effect on November 1, include an initial cap of 478,000 flights with a phased return to 500,000. Under the plan, aviation companies would be required to implement management plans if noise levels exceed specific thresholds. The Raad van State suggested maintaining the option to allow fewer flights if management plans prove insufficient.
Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Vincent Karremans welcomed the advice, calling it an 'upstarter' amid previous criticism of the Schiphol plans, though he noted that further work is required to address the council's observations.
