Schizophrenia research identifies volatility priors as potential treatment target
New research published in Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging suggests that volatility priors—an individual's expectations regarding environmental unpredictability—may serve as a modifiable target for treating schizophrenia-spectrum disorders.
The study found that as patients recovering from acute psychotic episodes showed improvements in the severity of their delusions, there was a significant reduction in their volatility priors. In patients with schizophrenia, the brain often sets these priors abnormally high, leading to an expectation of a chaotic or unstable environment. This perception can trigger the brain to generate delusions to make sense of the perceived instability.
Lead investigator Julia M. Sheffield, PhD, from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, noted that the research aims to determine if these priors are state-markers (temporary conditions) that can be modified through treatment, or trait-markers (permanent vulnerabilities) that require different therapeutic approaches. The findings offer potential for developing more effective treatments for delusions, which currently cause significant distress and disability.
