Schleipen Paper closes after 289 years of operation
Schleipen Paper, one of Germany's oldest paper manufacturers, has permanently ceased operations in Bad Dürkheim after 289 years. The company, founded in 1737, ended production at the close of August following insolvency proceedings opened by the Baden-Baden District Court in June.
The closure results in the loss of 73 jobs. Despite intensive efforts, no local or international investor was found to take over the business. Attempts to maintain at least the cutting division, which prepares large paper rolls for customers, also failed.
Insolvency administrator André Berbuer cited declining orders as a primary cause for the economic failure. He noted that German industrial sites face significant challenges, including high and unpredictable energy costs, strict regulatory requirements, inflexible labor laws, a shortage of skilled workers, and inadequate infrastructure such as poor road conditions and a lack of fiber optics.
