Schleswig-Holstein migrates over 200 workstations to Linux

The state chancellery of Schleswig-Holstein has largely completed a transition from Microsoft Windows to the open-source Linux operating system. More than 200 employees now use the new system, with only approximately 20 workstations remaining on Windows due to technical dependencies on specialized professional applications.

This migration is part of a broader strategy to increase digital sovereignty and reduce reliance on major US software providers. The initiative follows a 2025 move to replace the Microsoft productivity suite with LibreOffice. Digitalization Minister Dirk Schrödter described the transition as a central component for administrative progress.

The project serves as a pilot for the entire state administration, with plans to roll out Linux to other ministries and subordinate authorities. IT support for the new infrastructure is being provided through a cooperation between the public IT service provider Dataport and the open-source specialist company Gonicus.
