Schleswig-Holstein retires €6.5 million solar ferry

The State Office for Coastal Protection in Schleswig-Holstein has decided to retire the Missunde III, a solar-powered electric ferry, after approximately €6.5 million was invested in the project. The vessel faced significant operational issues, including difficulty mooring due to its weight and solar panels acting as sails in high winds, which prevented reliable service between Missunde and Brodersby.

To restore regular service, authorities are repairing the decommissioned diesel ferry, Missunde II. This older vessel had previously been sold for €17,000 but was bought back for €100,000 to address the service gap. While the Missunde III is being phased out, officials are considering future climate-friendly propulsion options for subsequent replacement vessels.
