Schloss Ambras appoints Thomas Kuster as interim scientific director and David Salchner as guest operations head
After a prolonged dispute between the Kunsthistorisches Museum (KHM) leadership and former director Veronika Sandbichler, Schloss Ambras in Innsbruck announced a new interim management structure. Historian Thomas Kuster will take over as interim scientific director on 3 August 2026, ensuring “a seamless continuation of all scientific projects and preparation for the future director,” according to KHM.
Tourism specialist David Salchner has been appointed to the newly created position of head of guest operations, a role intended to place “a conscious emphasis on service quality, guest experience and site development” and to strengthen the museum’s appeal for domestic and foreign visitors. Jonathan Fine, the KHM general director who had overseen the museum during the transition, will end his interim stewardship once the two appointments take effect.
The KHM museum association will open a recruitment process for a permanent scientific director in the coming weeks, aiming to develop Schloss Ambras into “one of the most significant museum sites in Europe.” A separate expert report found no evidence of bullying or “bossing” in the earlier conflict.
