Schönberg toll station tunnel proposal rejected by ASFINAG

The political debate regarding the Schönberg toll station on the A13 Brenner motorway has intensified. The NEOS party and the state of Tirol are calling for the motorway to be moved underground via a tunnel to alleviate local burdens.

However, the road operator ASFINAG has rejected the proposal for complete tunneling at this time. The company cited technical requirements and the current lack of sufficient digitalization for toll collection, noting that a physical toll station remains necessary until digital systems are fully implemented.

Tirol's transport councillor, Rene Zumtobel, suggested that while a tunnel is the long-term goal, the immediate focus must be on expanding digitalization. Local community groups and the municipality of Schönberg continue to advocate for the tunnel solution to minimize the impact of transit traffic on the population.
