Schönbrunn Palace opens new Engelstor access point

The Engelstor, located near the Kennedybrücke, has officially reopened as a new access point to the Schönbrunn Palace Park in Vienna. This new entrance provides a direct connection for visitors arriving via the U4 subway, tram, or bus, offering a shorter route to the palace grounds, the Tiergarten Schönbrunn, and the KHM Museumsverband's Imperial Carriage Museum.

The project, which cost approximately 650,000 euros, was a collaborative effort involving the Schönbrunn Group, Tiergarten Schönbrunn, the KHM Museumsverband, and the Austrian Federal Gardens, with support from the City of Vienna. The opening aims to alleviate congestion at the Hietzing Gate and improve accessibility for local residents in the Hietzing district.

Due to the site's status as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the reconstruction required careful historical consideration. Architects reconstructed the porter's lodge using traditional methods, including brickwork and lime mortar, based on limited archival photographic evidence from the 1930s and 1940s. The design aims to integrate the new structure seamlessly into the historic environment.
