Schneider Electric analyzes arc flash risks in 800-VDC data center architectures

Schneider Electric has released an analysis regarding arc flash risks in emerging 800-VDC architectures used in hyperscale data centers. The study compares different configurations and concludes that arc flash risks in 800-VDC systems can be managed and, in many instances, are comparable to those found in conventional alternating current (AC) systems.

The transition to 800-VDC infrastructure is being driven by the need to support higher rack densities in AI data centers and AI factories. Led by NVIDIA and supported by energy technology partners like Schneider Electric, this shift enables IT racks to operate at power levels of 400 kW or more, providing a practical path for megawatt-scale power distribution.

The research highlights that the impact of arc flashes depends heavily on system architecture, capacitor placement, and fault elimination behavior. The study suggests that advanced software modeling and digital twins can more accurately represent these risks as the industry moves toward higher power densities.
