Schneider Electric analyzes arc flash risks in 800 VDC data center power
Schneider Electric has released an analysis regarding the management of arc flash risks within 800 VDC power supply architectures used in data centers. The study, based on design models used by hyperscalers, compares two emerging 800 VDC configurations.
The findings indicate that arc flash consequences depend significantly on the specific architecture, capacitor placement, and the speed of fault detection and resolution. A key conclusion of the research is that even under severe scenarios, the risk in 800 VDC systems can be managed effectively, often reaching levels comparable to traditional alternating current (AC) systems.
This transition to 800 VDC is driven by the need to support high-density power racks for artificial intelligence. Led by NVIDIA and energy technology partners like Schneider Electric, this infrastructure shift enables large-scale data centers and AI factories to support IT racks of 400 kW and beyond. The study also highlights that advanced software and digital twins can provide more accurate representations of real-world arc flash risks.
