Scholars debate political implications of Pope Leo’s ‘Magnifica humanitas’

A scholarly debate has emerged regarding the political philosophy presented in ‘Magnifica humanitas’ by Pope Leo. The discussion centers on whether the Pope’s teachings promote a ‘morality without politics’ or a form of ‘pacifist statism.’

Political historian Giovanni Orsina has criticized the work for lacking political depth in its preaching of peace. However, essayist and lawyer Antonio Caragliu has countered this view, arguing that the Pope actually exalts the state paradigm. Caragliu suggests that the Pope views state control as a solution for the common good, including the necessity of exercising coercion over private actors, specifically those developing artificial intelligence.

Caragliu posits that the Pope’s views represent an excess of statism rather than a demystification of it. This debate follows a meeting at the Vatican between the Pope and Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah, who was invited to present the work.
