School bullying and violence rise in Indonesia

Reports indicate a rise in violence within Indonesian educational institutions. Data from the Indonesian Education Monitoring Network (JPPI) shows that cases of violence in educational units increased from 91 in 2020 to 641 in 2025. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, 233 cases were reported.

Recent specific incidents include a second-grade student in Pemalang, Central Java, who died following alleged bullying by older students. Additionally, in Pati, police identified 14 minors involved in bullying cases against students. While regulations such as Permendikbudristek Number 46 of 2023 mandate the formation of violence prevention teams in schools, concerns remain regarding the effectiveness of their implementation.
