School bus incident in Campos dos Goytacazes sparks safety concerns
A school bus incident in the Palmares locality of Campos dos Goytacazes has raised significant safety concerns regarding student transportation and rural infrastructure. On Thursday, October 22, a bus carrying students from Colégio Estadual Baltazar Carneiro skidded while crossing a wooden bridge, leaving the vehicle partially hanging off the structure. Students were forced to exit through the windows and use a ladder provided by local residents to reach safety.
While no injuries were reported, the event has caused apprehension among parents. The municipal Secretariat of Agriculture suggested the skid might have been caused by a mechanical issue with one of the bus wheels, though official forensic results are pending. The Secretariat also noted that the bridge structure did not break and that improvement projects for the area are planned.
The State Secretariat of Education (Seeduc), which manages transportation for state school students, confirmed that the students were safely transferred to another vehicle. While Seeduc stated it would adopt additional safety measures to prevent recurrence, it has not yet detailed specific actions or whether an administrative inquiry has been launched.
