School districts in Canada and US report declining enrollment
School districts in Canada and the United States are reporting declines in student enrollment.
In Surrey, British Columbia, Surrey Schools reported its second consecutive year of declining enrollment. Regular student numbers fell by 1,182, or 1.5 per cent, to a total of 75,795. Deputy Superintendent Andrew Holland attributed the decrease to changes in federal immigration policy and residents moving within or outside the province. Other declines were noted in adult learning, online learning, and international fee-paying students.
In Park City, Utah, the Park City School District is facing a similar trend, with preliminary reports showing 87 fewer students than the previous year. To combat declining numbers and stabilize the student population, the Board of Education has decided to continue its open enrollment policy for the 2027-28 school year. This allows students living outside district boundaries to apply for classes. Business Administrator Randy Upton noted that while enrollment is dropping, it has not yet significantly impacted district funding.
