School districts issue safety reminders for upcoming bus commutes

As the new school year approaches, school districts in Berlin and Garrett County are issuing safety reminders and conducting orientations to ensure student security during bus commutes.

In Berlin, the Central School District held an annual bus safety orientation for Pre-K and Kindergarten families. The event, led by transportation supervisors and mechanics, taught students about identifying danger zones, using seatbelts, and safe crossing procedures. Students also participated in rides with bus drivers and attendants to familiarize themselves with the vehicles.

Garrett County Public Schools is urging motorists and families to prioritize bus stop safety. The district reminds drivers that Maryland law requires them to stop for school buses with flashing red lights and extended stop arms. Students are advised to arrive at stops early, stay away from the roadway, and follow all driver directions to ensure a safe transition to and from school.
