School eye health program reaches nearly 15,000 students in Northern Sri Lanka

The second phase of the “Clear Vision, Bright Future” initiative has concluded in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province. Conducted between July 21 and October 23, 2026, the program targeted Grade 1 students across 13 educational zones in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, and Mannar.

A total of 14,997 students, representing 92.6% of the Grade 1 population in these areas, underwent eye examinations. Consultant ophthalmologist Dr. M. Malaravan from the Jaffna Teaching Hospital personally examined each student, supported by ophthalmic optometrists.

The screenings identified refractive errors in 1,455 students, or approximately 9.7% of those tested. The program aims to detect vision issues early and provide necessary corrective measures, such as eyeglasses, to prevent negative impacts on students' educational development and personal growth.
