School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play extends Broadway run

The Broadway production of “School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play,” a comedy written by Ghanaian-American playwright Jocelyn Bioh, has extended its run at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Originally scheduled to conclude on November 1, the production will now remain on the schedule until November 15.

Directed by Whitney White and produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club, the one-act play follows a group of adolescent girls in 1986 Ghana. The plot centers on the intense rivalries and hierarchies within a school clique as they prepare for the Miss Ghana beauty pageant, a dynamic complicated by the arrival of a transfer student from the United States.

The play has received critical acclaim for its exploration of themes such as colorism, jealousy, and social competition through biting humor. This Broadway debut follows the play’s previous successful stagings in various U.S. theaters and London.
