School infrastructure gaps identified in India and Malawi

Educational authorities in India and Malawi are addressing critical gaps in school infrastructure, specifically regarding water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities.

In Solapur, India, Director of Education Dr. Mahesh Palkar has called for the development of action plans to improve school facilities. During a workshop for the ‘Chala, Shalet Jauya’ (Let’s Go to School) campaign, officials emphasized the need for drinking water, toilets, classrooms, electricity, and protective walls to enhance educational quality.

In the Chitipa District of Malawi, learners are reporting severe shortages of safe sanitation. Students noted that the lack of private toilets and changing rooms for menstrual hygiene causes adolescent girls to miss classes or drop out entirely. Additionally, the necessity of walking long distances to fetch water poses health risks and exposes children to potential violence and exploitation.
