School placement shortage leaves 487 students without confirmed spots

Hundreds of students face an uncertain start to the new school year due to a shortage of available school places. Out of 721 children referred to schools outside their residential areas, only 234 have completed their enrollment, leaving 487 students without a definitive placement.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture has placed the responsibility for completing enrollment on parents. Gracia Valies-Ormskirk, Director of Algemeen Vormend Onderwijs (AVO), has urged parents to finalize registrations immediately, warning that reserved spots may be reassigned to other students if not secured.

The shortage arose during the pre-registration phase, where schools faced an excess capacity of 721 students for whom no local spots were available. While the Ministry is attempting to distribute students to schools with remaining space, many parents have resisted these suggestions due to the increased distance from home. Officials noted that this temporary redistribution is an emergency measure rather than a structural solution to the capacity crisis.
