School psychologists urged to lead mental health and bullying prevention
Experts are highlighting the critical need for school psychologists to address mental health and bullying. In Mexico, Rafael Gallegos of the Colegio de Psicólogos de Victoria noted that only about one percent of public schools currently employ psychology professionals. Gallegos argued that psychologists should focus on community-wide prevention and teacher training to detect anxiety, depression, and bullying, rather than solely providing individual clinical sessions. This stance contrasts with Tamaulipas Secretary of Education Miguel Ángel Valdez García, who stated that staffing every school with a psychologist is not feasible.
In Spain, research indicates that bullying remains a significant concern, with many victims failing to report incidents. A study in Madrid found that students with neurodevelopmental disorders are nearly six times more likely to be bullied than their peers, a risk that increases to nine times for those with autism spectrum disorders. However, data shows that targeted interventions like the LINKlusive program can be effective, reducing victimization by 45.6% among primary students with special educational needs.
