School season brings financial pressure and preparation for families

As the new school year approaches, families in Hungary are facing significant financial and emotional preparations. A recent survey indicates that the median planned expenditure for school supplies is 60,000 HUF per child, a figure that rises to 100,000 HUF for first-graders. More than one-third of respondents report that these costs represent a serious or very serious financial burden on their September household budgets.

Spending patterns vary by grade level. While parents of older students often reuse existing backpacks, clothing and footwear remain the largest expense categories across most age groups. For those purchasing new school bags, the typical price range is between 15,000 and 25,000 HUF.

Beyond financial concerns, the transition to school presents psychological challenges for children. Experts suggest parents can bolster student confidence by maintaining a positive attitude toward school, practicing morning routines in advance to reduce stress, and role-playing social situations, such as introducing oneself to classmates or asking for help in class.
