School security incidents and teacher strikes reported in Mexico and Argentina
In San Luis Potosí, Mexico, Deysi Maribel López Sierra, head of the State Secretariat of Education (SEGE), addressed an incident at the Salvador Varela Elementary School. She clarified that while an outsider entered the premises during school exit procedures and an altercation occurred that resulted in some teachers receiving blows, the individual was not carrying a machete or any other white weapon.
Following the event, authorities announced plans to reinforce surveillance and access controls at educational facilities. López Sierra emphasized that increased involvement from parents will be essential in identifying unauthorized individuals on school grounds.
In Ensenada, Argentina, teacher unions SUTEBA and UDOCBA have called for strikes following a scandal at the Enrique Mosconi Elementary School. The unrest began after parents accused a teacher of mistreating students, including allegations of denying bathroom access and using tape to silence children.
The situation escalated into physical confrontations and insults directed at school orientation and management teams, requiring police intervention. SUTEBA has initiated a 36-hour strike under the slogan “Basta de violencia en las escuelas!” (Enough violence in schools!) to protest the aggression faced by educators.
