School shooting in Zamboanga University leaves one dead

A school shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Mindanao, Philippines, resulted in the death of a 15-year-old student, Patrick Dylan Wee. The perpetrator, identified as Mohammad Mael Jalani, a student aged between 14 and 15, opened fire at the Junior High School campus before committing suicide.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla reported that the attacker livestreamed the incident on Facebook using a body camera, presenting a first-person perspective similar to a shooting video game. The footage was subsequently circulated on platforms such as X and Facebook.

The incident has prompted calls from Cardinal José Advincula, the Archbishop of Manila, for families and institutions to better support youth facing anxiety, bullying, and loneliness. It has also reignited national political debates regarding social media access for minors and school security, following a similar fatal shooting in Tacloban in June.
