School supplies costs impact family budgets and employer benefits

As the new school year approaches, families are facing increased financial pressure due to the rising costs of school supplies, including bags, notebooks, stationery, clothing, and footwear. In some cases, the cumulative expense for households with multiple children can significantly impact the family budget. To manage these costs, many parents are opting to reuse items from previous years or staggering their purchases by prioritizing essential items first.

In the corporate sector, some employers offer contributions to help employees cover school-related expenses. However, the tax treatment of these benefits varies. In the Czech Republic, direct cash contributions for school supplies are generally treated as taxable income, meaning employees do not receive the full amount after taxes and social/health insurance deductions. While some companies attempt to categorize these as tax-free benefits, standard school goods like backpacks or pens do not automatically qualify for tax exemptions under current regulations, unlike specific educational or sports club fees.
