Surrey school trustee seat vacancy could trigger $840,000 byelection

A potential school trustee byelection in Surrey, British Columbia, could cost the school district approximately $840,000. The situation arises following the dual election of Garry Thind, who was re-elected as a school trustee on October 17 and subsequently elected as a Conservative MLA for Surrey-Guildford on October 24.

Once sworn in as an MLA, Thind will be disqualified from serving as a school trustee. Under the Local Government Act, a judge may determine whether the position should be declared vacant, necessitating a byelection, or if the candidate with the next-highest number of votes, incumbent Gary Tymoschuk, should be declared elected.

Surrey Schools confirmed that any court application for a determination must be filed by November 20. The BC Conservative party is reportedly exploring legal options to avoid the costs associated with a byelection.
