School year preparation: Routine adjustments and rising costs

As the new school year approaches in approximately three weeks, parents in Romania are preparing for both the psychological and financial transitions.

Psychologically, experts suggest helping children adapt by gradually adjusting sleep schedules and reducing screen time to avoid sudden stress. Establishing a predictable routine is recommended to help children feel more secure during the transition from summer vacation to a structured school schedule.

Financially, the costs for school supplies are becoming a primary concern. In areas like Ploiești, stationery costs alone are estimated between 500 and 1,500 lei, depending on brands and retailers. First-grade students may require between 400 and 800 lei for essential items, while fifth-grade students face budgets of 300 to 600 lei for specific materials. Additionally, clothing and footwear requirements can add over 2,000 lei to annual expenses. To manage these costs, some suggest utilizing existing supplies or waiting for post-start-of-term discounts at supermarkets.
