School zone safety: Tips for drivers and pedestrians

As the back-to-school season begins, safety officials are issuing guidance to manage increased traffic and protect students. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and Caltrans are promoting the “ABCs” of safety: staying Alert for bicyclists and watching for Children crossing the street.

Drivers are urged to exercise heightened vigilance in school zones, adhere to reduced speed limits, and strictly follow school bus laws, such as stopping when a bus extends its stop sign. Key recommendations for motorists include avoiding distractions, staying alert for sudden movements from children, and providing at least three feet of space when passing bicyclists.

Pedestrians and students are advised to use sidewalks, cross at marked crosswalks, and look both ways before crossing. In areas without sidewalks, pedestrians should walk facing oncoming traffic to maintain visibility. Making eye contact with drivers before crossing is also recommended to ensure they have seen them.
