Schools implement smartphone bans to reduce classroom distractions

Educational institutions are increasingly implementing smartphone and personal device bans to reduce classroom distractions and improve student focus. In Nigeria, new policies in primary and preschools prohibit smartphones, smartwatches, and tablets during school activities, though exceptions exist for medical emergencies or teacher-led lessons.

In the United States, a significant movement toward device restriction is underway. Michigan has enacted laws banning cellphones during instructional time in K-12 public schools, joining at least 35 other states. In Texas, House Bill 1481 requires personal communication devices to remain powered off and stored in backpacks throughout the instructional day, a rule being enforced at Plano Senior High School.

While many educators support these measures to curb cheating and engagement issues, students and some parents have raised concerns regarding emergency communication and the loss of digital tools for research. Additionally, the rise of ‘teacher-influencers’ has introduced new challenges, as educators use social media to broadcast classroom experiences, sometimes leading to controversies regarding student privacy and the portrayal of student performance.
