Schrems inaugurates 6.6 million euro flood protection project

A new flood protection system has been inaugurated in Schrems, Lower Austria, to protect approximately 300 people and 130 buildings along the Braunaubach stream. The project, which cost 6.6 million euros, was funded jointly by the federal government, the state of Lower Austria, and the municipality of Schrems.

Key technical measures included widening the stream's discharge profile, adjusting the bed gradient over a one-kilometer stretch, and renovating existing embankments. The project also involved raising retaining walls and renewing local infrastructure, such as a park bridge and a sports field walkway. Additionally, the stream underwent ecological improvements, including the installation of weirs and groynes.

Following recent flooding in 2024, local officials noted that a new hazard zone plan is currently being developed to serve as a foundation for future flood protection initiatives in the area.
