Markus Söder proposes cutting social benefits for wanted criminals

CSU leader Markus Söder has called for the suspension of basic social security benefits for foreign criminals who are currently wanted under arrest warrants.

However, the German government faces significant implementation hurdles. The Federal Ministry of the Interior has confirmed that there is currently no legal basis allowing job centers to automatically cross-reference recipient data with police arrest warrant databases.

While the government is working on new regulations to enable data exchange between the police and job centers, the Federal Employment Agency notes that job centers currently only learn of incarcerations through the individuals themselves or their relatives. This lack of systematic verification means the proposed exclusion of benefits cannot be implemented in the short term.
