Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF payouts nearly quadruple since 2012
The Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD) has seen its dividend payout nearly quadruple since 2012. An investor who purchased shares at the end of 2011 would see an annual cash return of approximately 12% on their original investment based on 2025 distributions.
The fund tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index, which selects companies based on free cash flow to debt, return on equity, dividend yield, and dividend growth. The index undergoes a reconstitution every March to replace slower-growing companies with faster-growing ones. In March, the index replaced 22 stocks with 25 new holdings, a turnover of approximately 31% of the portfolio, which increased the holdings' dividend growth measure from 8.6% to roughly 9.4%.
Some analysis suggests the fund utilizes a systematic approach that can benefit from market dips, as the underlying index targets quality values that may face temporary price pressure during rebalancing periods.
