Schwandorf animal shelter sees surge in interest for abandoned dachshund puppies

Five abandoned dachshund puppies, approximately nine weeks old, have triggered a surge of adoption inquiries at the Schwandorf animal shelter in Bavaria. The puppies were discovered at a highway rest area near Wernberg-Köblitz. Inquiries for the animals have originated from Bavaria, Saxony, and Austria.

The shelter is currently providing medical care, vaccinations, and deworming for the puppies. Due to health protocols, the animals must remain in quarantine for approximately six weeks before they can be placed in new homes. The shelter has requested that interested parties refrain from further inquiries until the quarantine period is complete and the dogs can be more thoroughly assessed.

A female dachshund was also found at the same rest area shortly after the puppies and is also being housed at the Schwandorf shelter. It remains undecided whether she will be reunited with the puppies. Authorities are still investigating whether the puppies originated from an illegal transport operation.
