Schwarz-Gruppe leads 7 billion CAD funding round for Cohere
The Canadian-German artificial intelligence company Cohere has completed a Series E funding round, seeking up to 7 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 4.7 billion euros). This represents the largest private capital raise in the history of the Canadian technology sector. The company's valuation has reached approximately 35.7 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 23.9 billion euros).
The funding round is led by the Schwarz-Gruppe, the parent company of Lidl and Kaufland, which aims to expand its presence in European AI and cloud infrastructure. Other participants include the Canadian government and existing investors such as Nvidia.
Cohere, which maintains headquarters in both Toronto and Berlin, recently strengthened its market position through a merger with the Heidelberg-based AI specialist Aleph Alpha. This transaction, described as a de facto takeover of Aleph Alpha by Cohere, seeks to combine European research excellence with global corporate scaling.
