Schwerin to expand cycling infrastructure and regional routes

The city of Schwerin is working to close a gap in the 285-kilometer Residenzstädte-Rundweg (Residenz Cities Circular Route) to improve regional tourism. The project involves expanding and paving a one-kilometer shoreline path between Zippendorf and Mueß to a width of 2.50 meters, complete with signage and rest areas.

In addition to the tourist route, the city is converting Mecklenburgstraße into a bicycle street to improve north-south transit for daily commuters. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year at a cost of 776,000 euros, with 90 percent of the funding provided by the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The expansion has sparked local debate regarding the use of asphalt on shoreline paths due to environmental concerns.
