Schwerin UNESCO World Heritage Site Boosts Tourism

The residence ensemble of Schwerin was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on 27 July 2024, joining sites such as Cologne Cathedral and Bamberg Old Town. Two years after the inscription, the city recorded 236,399 visitors in 2025, generating 443,245 overnight stays – a 3.6 % rise over the previous year and 335 more stays than the 2009 record set by the Federal Garden Show.

Occupancy for establishments with at least ten beds reached 42.4 % in 2025. While the UNESCO label appears to have helped tourism, officials note gaps in visitor guidance and signage. A clear, intuitive route through the historic centre, similar to Bamberg’s approach, is being considered to make the World Heritage sites more accessible and cohesive for guests.
