Schwerin Zoo welcomes new Nubian giraffe calf

A female Nubian giraffe calf was born at the Schwerin Zoo on October 13. The calf is reported to be agile and healthy, and its seven-year-old mother, Kahlua, is described as being attentive and caring.

Due to the unpredictable nature of giraffe gestation periods, the birth occurred unexpectedly despite staff preparations. To minimize stress, the mother and calf are currently being kept separate from the rest of the giraffe group. They will be gradually reintroduced to the herd once their health and development are confirmed, a process expected to take several weeks.

The birth is part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) for giraffes. This program manages approximately 776 animals across 305 facilities, including about 440 Nubian giraffes. In the wild, the population of Northern giraffes is estimated to be just under 7,000.
