Sciacca fiber optic outage disrupts fixed and mobile networks

A major fiber optic backbone failure in Sciacca, Italy, is causing significant service disruptions across various areas of the city. The damage occurred near the Via Mazzini central station when nine main fiber cables were severed during underground works conducted by contractors working on behalf of Enel.

The outage affects both fixed connections and mobile networks, as some mobile infrastructures rely on the same damaged data transport lines. Technical teams from Enel and FiberCop are currently on-site working to repair the backbone.

Local official Salvino Patti stated that services are expected to be progressively restored over the next 48 hours as repairs continue. The Municipality of Sciacca has announced it will conduct a full technical investigation once the emergency is resolved to determine responsibility and verify if proper preventive checks were performed prior to the excavation.
