Italy wildfires strike Sicily and Teramo provinces

Italy is facing severe wildfire emergencies across Sicily and the Teramo province. In Sicily, the Regional Forestry Corps reported 198 fires over a single weekend, prompting 20 aerial interventions by Canadairs and heavy helicopters. Most of these fires originated in uncultivated land and spread rapidly toward urban areas and forests. Notable incidents include a fire in Sciacca that caused smoke intoxication in six people, including an infant, and a major blaze in Menfi that destroyed 130 hectares of vegetation, three cars, and a beach facility.

In the Teramo province, a significant fire in Castilenti burned approximately 16 hectares of vegetation. The proximity of the flames forced the precautionary evacuation of a local hotel. Emergency responders, including the Vigili del Fuoco and regional aerial units, worked to contain the blaze. Other active fire fronts were reported in Atri, Notaresco, and the Calanchi Reserve.
