Italy unlocks 7 million euros in fuel tax credits for fishing industry

The Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry (Masaf) has released a decree to unlock nearly 7 million euros in tax credits for the fishing industry. This measure aims to support fishers facing soaring diesel prices, which have exceeded 1.30 euros per liter, and the economic pressures of climate change.

The decree identifies 1,937 eligible fishing enterprises, allowing them to claim a tax credit covering up to 20% of the expenses incurred for purchasing diesel and gasoline. Industry organizations, including Legacoop and Coldiretti Pesca, have welcomed the move as vital relief for fleets in regions such as Calabria, Sicily, and the Emilia-Romagna coast.

Despite the relief, significant concerns remain. In areas like Sciacca, Sicily, operators warn that current fuel costs make returning to sea economically unsustainable, threatening jobs and local food supplies. In the Emilia-Romagna region, cooperatives and local mayors have called for the measure to be extended through 2026 and for the establishment of a formal dialogue between the Ministry and regional authorities to ensure the long-term stability of the sector.
